The News about the News by: Alisa Miller
Alisa Miller, CEO of Public Radio International, tries to bring information to the public in hopes for them to interconnect with the world. In the Ted Talk, Miller shows how the American news sites gave an image of the world. In the photo one could see how news stories shape the way Americans see different regions of the world and how parts like South America are not being covered. Why? Miller explains the news companies do not cover many areas of the world because it is cheaper. It is cheaper to cover a celebrity's death, which became one of the most viewed news article in most of the world except Iraq, than cover a political issue in South America. Another problem that the news companies have decreased their number of foreign bureaus by half (50%). This means that a lot of places in the world, they have been eradicated from being newsworthy, and so no news is being formed from there.
In class, we have read many poems from the Beat Generation. The people from this movement did not believe or act in mainstream values. Instead they stuck to themselves and found information mostly on their own. Instead of believing and accepting what the media told them and what the government told them they rebelled against those actions and tried to find the truth themselves. In my American Dream I would like America to be more informed on the World outside of the American borders and that the news can change to be able to give the people the right of knowledge.
