The Good News on Poverty (Yes there's good news) By: Bono
The artist Bono from U2 makes a very good statement about how we are eradicating poverty not only in Africa but the world. Using collected data and his humor, he explains to the public that by 2030 extreme poverty will be in the zero zone. That is to say that there will not be anymore people living under $1.25 a day. While his speech comes to an end. Bono says that this is all good news but that humans tend to mess things up by changing their methods. If a method works then stick to it. Bono goes on to say “ We can’t get this done until we really accept that we can get this done”, meaning yes there will be times that will bring us down but that we need to focus on the bigger picture; ending extreme poverty.
Another point that Bono makes is that we as the people can demand our governments to show us where our money is going and to show us the facts and the data. This would be a way to try to end corruption in the government system and to put our money where it is most needed and most appropriate for. All of these factors can and will work but as long as we come together to combat it. As Bono says in his last statement “...the power of the people is so much stronger than the people in power”.
Reflecting back to The Great Gatsby that we have read in class, we can see just how much light has been shown on poverty in a few decades. In the novel Tom takes Nick to see his mistress and they pass a place called the Valley of Ashes. This place is where the poor live and Tom comments to Nick “ Terrible place, isn’t it”? By this comment Nick just agrees with him and that's the end of the conversation. Now you see charities and people actually involved in the discussion of how we can eradicate poverty. The times have changed for the better and we are one step closer to ending the unforgiving battle. That battle of course is how we can incorporate Equity in our civilization to let everyone have a chance at achieving their dreams . The way Bono communicates with the public and the strong data he shows, really brings up my spirits of how we can reach our goals, whether it be to end poverty or to travel the world.
