Why Some of us Don't Have One True Calling By: Emilie Wapnick
Emilie Wapnick, a “multipotentialite”, speaks on the subject of how people with many passions or interests are lost in the world of “specialists”. These multipotential people are seen as outcasts and made to just pursue one thing or one career path in life. Emilie changes that way of thinking when she says that these people “ might feel alone. They might feel like they don’t have a purpose… and might feel like there is something wrong with you”. She goes on to say that there is nothing wrong with having multiple interests and introduces the audience to a term called Multipotentialites.
Multipotentialites are a group of people who have many different talents or interests in life in which they pursue. Our culture tends to “create” a world where one can only have one path, one destiny, when in reality that is not the case. Emilie gives examples of people who work in two distinct workforces, for example a man by the name of Bob Childs, is a violin maker and a Psychologist. Both of which he does very well. She goes on to say that multipotentialites have three superpowers, The first is Idea Synthesis, meaning since the person has interests in so many areas that they can combine these interests and create a completely new idea. The second is Adaptability, in which the person has worked in so many different jobs, they can adapt to a new working environment easily and use the skills they have learned previously to accomplish their new job requirements. The third is Rapid Learning, in which the practice of always doing something new makes it easier to learn.
In the novel, The Catcher in the Rye, Holden feels left out of society. He doesn’t feel like he fits in and is even expelled from his former school, Pencey Prep. He wants to do many things like travel and leave New York but he also knows that he must find a job, one in which he has no idea what it would be since he seems to not have any specific interests. In my American Dream, the culture would change in which people are free to express their interests in more than one career/job path and encouraged to do so. In my American Dream, America would shine light on the Potential of everyone and everything they are doing.
